Does the recent internet phenomenon of “China-maxxing”, in which social media users post about living in “a very Chinese moment” of their lives, also reflect greater interest in learning Mandarin? In recent years, Silicon Valley billionaires have proudly spoken about enrolling their children in Mandarin lessons, and annual participation in the HSK Mandarin-language exam has increased, with over seven-hundred thousand test takers in 2024 according to China’s Ministry of Education. In this context, Chinese language and culture may be seen by Westerners not as a distant, exotic “other,” but as part of a society they can learn about and meaningfully engage with. This interest may signal a growing desire among young people to participate more actively in Chinese cultural and social life.
It is easy to forget that, not so long ago, Mandarin was portrayed to Western audiences as a strange and forbiddingly difficult language. Consider the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory, which first aired almost two decades ago. In the first season finale, the brilliant but socially awkward character Sheldon Cooper attempts to learn Mandarin to confront the owner of a Chinese restaurant over a dish he suspects has been falsely advertised. Despite his intellectual abilities, Sheldon’s efforts are less than successful, and his poor pronunciation results in comical misunderstandings. This humor partly depends on the presumed difficulty of Mandarin, seemingly beyond the reach of even the most academically gifted. In contrast, Everything Everywhere All at Once, winner of the 2023 Academy Award for Best Picture, features extensive Mandarin and Cantonese dialogue not as a linguistic curiosity, but as an essential part of the characters' lives. The character Joy, the American-born daughter of immigrant parents, struggles to use Mandarin to communicate with her grandfather, but her efforts are already beyond the humorous attempts of Sheldon Cooper. While these two productions are not hard evidence of a broader historical trend, they illustrate evolving representations of Chinese language in American popular culture: from an unfamiliar language whose difficulty is itself entertaining to a language used to navigate everyday relationships.

Alongside the China-maxxing trend on Western social media, Chinese-language social media platforms have seen growing participation from foreign content creators who engage directly with Chinese audiences. For example, Xingyue (星悦小美女PKU), an American creator from California, produces Mandarin-language videos about everyday life and cultural differences. Another American creator, Paul (保保熊), popularized the viral expression “City不City,” which was widely adopted by Chinese social media users. Their popularity illustrates how foreigners can participate in Chinese-language culture rather than simply observe it from outside. Educational exchanges provide further opportunities for such engagement. While the United States has long been a prestigious destination for international students, China recently announced an initiative inviting 100,000 young Americans to visit for study and exchanges over the next five years. Interest in studying in China and learning Chinese is certainly not limited to Americans, and these developments reflect the increasingly diverse contexts in which foreigners encounter and use Mandarin.

This growing familiarity with Mandarin may also be changing how Chinese people react to foreigners speaking the language, a shift I have experienced firsthand as an American researcher working in China. When I first visited China in 2014, a foreigner uttering even a simple “thank you” or “hello” in Chinese prompted enthusiastic exclamations of “Wow, your Chinese is so good! You’re amazing!” Such reactions were partly expressions of polite encouragement, but also reflected an assumption that Chinese is an exceptionally difficult language, making even modest progress by foreign learners worthy of admiration. Today, I rarely encounter such reactions. A foreigner who can communicate beyond simple greetings or ordering food may still receive a polite compliment, but speaking Chinese no longer seems quite so extraordinary. These observations are personal, and experiences certainly vary, but I still wonder how expectations might evolve over the next decade as Chinese speakers become more accustomed to hearing Mandarin spoken with foreign accents.
As a language sciences researcher, I am interested to see how the growing number and diversity of Mandarin learners may contribute to our understanding of language acquisition and processing. Mandarin has several grammatical features that distinguish it from Indo-European languages, presenting potential challenges for second-language learners. For instance, even though Mandarin ostensibly shares a basic subject-verb-object word order akin to English, Spanish, or German, it also allows more flexibility in how grammatical relations are expressed. For example, the sentence鸭子吃了 (duck eat LE) can mean either that the duck has eaten something or that someone has eaten the duck—the specific interpretation will depend on context. These grammatical differences are in addition to the more familiar challenges for learners, including lexical tone, Chinese characters, and grammatical aspect. For researchers, the growing diversity of Mandarin learners provides opportunities to investigate how adults acquire unfamiliar linguistic structures and adapt their existing language-processing strategies.

As Mandarin increasingly becomes a language used by people from diverse linguistic backgrounds, native Chinese speakers may also need to make adjustments. For instance, native English speakers in the US or UK routinely encounter people who speak English as a second language, and often adjust their speech and comprehension to accommodate their non-native conversation partners. As native Mandarin speakers increasingly encounter Mandarin spoken in different ways, they may need to adopt some of these accommodation strategies. The popularity of “China-maxxing” may prove temporary, as internet trends often do. But the social connections formed through language learning can be long-lasting, and meaningful communication requires effort from both native speakers and language learners.
