Huzhou brings traditional brush-making craft to life through cultural tourism

The Huzhou Writing Brush Town in Shanlian town, Huzhou, Zhejiang province, is bringing centuries-old craftsmanship to life through cultural tourism, with study tours offering visitors hands-on experiences of traditional brush-making.

Located in Nanxun district, Shanlian is known as the birthplace of Huzhou writing brushes, one of China's "Four Treasures of the Study". The Huzhou writing brush-making technique was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage item in 2006.

At the town's cultural venues and workshops, visitors can learn about the intricate process behind making a quality writing brush, from selecting materials to shaping, trimming, and finishing. Craftspeople also guide tourists through traditional steps such as selecting brush hairs and making their own brushes.

The town has developed more than 70 study tour courses and over 10 themed routes that combine intangible cultural heritage, traditional arts, and rural experiences. In the past two years, it has received nearly 100,000 study tour visits, with travelers mainly coming from cities in the Yangtze River Delta region.

The growth of cultural tourism has also brought new vitality to the historic town. By integrating heritage preservation with education and tourism, Shanlian is creating new ways for younger generations to connect with traditional craftsmanship while supporting local development.
