Xianju county in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, is developing its traditional Chinese medicinal herb industry by leveraging its favorable natural conditions. As a major production area for several authentic medicinal herbs, the county now has more than 27,000 mu (1,800 hectares) of herb plantations, with the industry's full value chain output reaching 1.36 billion yuan ($202.36 million) in 2025.
Local farmers are improving breeding and crop rotation techniques to cope with market fluctuations. Through a model involving companies, production bases, cooperatives, and farmers, Xianju county has vitalized Xianjuzhu (Atractylodes macrocephala) with product quality exceeding national standards and gaining a market premium.
Several companies have established planting bases and launched projects focused on processing Polygonatum and producing traditional Chinese medicine decoction pieces. They have also developed value-added products, including herbal tea and medicinal cuisine.
The county is further exploring integrated models that combine study tours, wellness services, and health-oriented dining. By connecting planting, processing, and sales, Xianju county is turning authentic medicinal herbs into an industrial driver while increasing local residents' incomes.
