The replica of design manuscripts for the Huaniao Lighthouse was donated by Felicity Somers Eve, great-granddaughter of David Marr Henderson, in the Huaniao island, Zhoushan, on Nov 5.
These manuscripts are invaluable papers which document the modern history of marine navigation mark construction in China.
David Marr Henderson, China's first chief lighthouse engineer, joined China's maritime customs service during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) in 1869 and oversaw the design and construction of 34 coastal lighthouses.
Among them, the Huaniao Lighthouse, located in the North Saddle of Zhoushan, is one of the earliest built lighthouse near the Yangtze River estuary and holds particular historical value.
