Quzhou village revives 1,500-year-old folk tradition

A 1,500-year-old folk ceremony honoring Tang Dynasty (618–907) poet Yang Jiong was held in Yingchuan village, Quzhou, Zhejiang province, on July 14, reviving a local tradition.

The "Yang Jiong Parade", listed as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage item in Zhejiang in 2007, recreated traditional rituals including a procession, offerings, music, and performances.

The ceremony began at 7:30 am with three bell strikes. Flag bearers and drummers led the procession, while villagers presented grain offerings and recited tributes honoring Yang's integrity, public service, and contributions to the local community during his tenure as an official.

After the ceremony, the procession moved through the ancient streets of Yingchuan village in Gaojia town, Qujiang district, giving people the chance to enjoy local folk culture.

A traditional steamed bun distribution event was also held to share festive blessings with the community.

With a history of more than 1,500 years, the tradition has become a cultural symbol of Gaojia town.

In recent years, Qujiang district has promoted the preservation and revitalization of its intangible cultural heritage through folk activities and cultural performances, supporting rural cultural development.
