Ling Chen, a pipa (a four-stringed Chinese lute) player from Tiantai county in Taizhou, East China's Zhejiang province, has spent the past decade promoting traditional Chinese music in Budapest, Hungary.
Ling, who moved to Budapest in 2016, has introduced Chinese folk music to international audiences through concerts and cultural events. Her repertoire includes classic pieces such as Ambush from All Sides, which she performs with a blend of traditional techniques and cross-cultural interpretation. Audiences have shown growing interest, with some seeking to learn more about the instrument and its history.
In recent years, she has focused on teaching to support long-term cultural exchange, incorporating cultural context into lessons, explaining the history behind each piece, and encouraging students to perform on stage, with several now presenting traditional works independently.
Ling has also explored collaborations with musicians from Hungary and other European countries, adapting local music and combining Western instruments with the pipa, and hopes to bring the instrument into more schools to expand global understanding of Chinese folk music.
