70 years on: The rise of Zhejiang film industry

Zhejiang’s film industry has witnessed unprecedented pace for decades since the founding of the People’s Republic of China 70 years ago.

In 1949, the public cultural facilities in the province were rather scarce, reflecting in its limited number of cinemas – 10 in total. The number rose to 162 by the end of 1982.

Up to now, Zhejiang has a total of 726 cinemas and 5094 big screens. In 2018, 137.86 million people watched movies in theatres. Approximately, 378,000 people per day went to the cinema, indicating the great progress made by Zhejiang in the mass cultural undertakings.
