Waterkeeper Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding waterways around the world, held an event in Hangzhou from Oct 27 to 29, gathering participants from China, the United States, Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Thailand.

Themed AI Empowering Water Conservation, the event explored how technology and culture can jointly advance intelligent and collaborative water governance across the region.

Mary Beth Postman, deputy director at Waterkeeper Alliance, noted that AI's data processing and pattern recognition capabilities are transforming the protection of water from a model of passive response to one of active prevention and precise intervention. She expressed hope that technology will continue to aid in the protection of rivers, lakes, and coastlines worldwide.

Dominik Sprenger from Germany's Hanns Seidel Foundation shared lessons from the 2021 Ahr Valley floods. Germany has since launched the KI-HopE project, which uses AI to integrate meteorological, hydrological, and soil data for local flood prediction.

From drone patrols in Zhejiang's soil conservation areas to DNA-based aquatic monitoring networks, participants agreed that technology is reshaping how we understand and protect water. The Hangzhou event underscored one unifying belief: water knows no borders — and collective action defines the future.
