Zhoushan Putuoshan International Airport in East China's Zhejiang province has recorded its highest-ever monthly passenger throughput since it opened in 1997, handling 317,035 visits in March, up 19.9 percent from the same period in 2025.

Passenger traffic exceeded 10,000 for 19 consecutive days, with a daily record of 11,789 passengers on March 14. The steady rise followed a strong Spring Festival, when daily throughput surpassed 10,000 for six straight days.

The growth was driven by the combined effect of increased tourism demand and the introduction of based aircraft operations. Previously, flight schedules were heavily concentrated in early morning arrivals and evening departures, limiting the use of morning departure slots and reducing travel options for local passengers.

The situation improved after China Express stationed aircraft overnight at the airport in July 2025, with the number increasing from two to four planes by late October. This allowed the airport to expand morning departures, add new routes, and optimize its network.

From January to March, the airport handled 6,417 flights, up 28 percent year-on-year, and 758,000 passenger visits, a rise of 14.4 percent. Traffic on routes such as Zhoushan to Quzhou rose by 117 percent, while routes to Nanchang, Chizhou, and Lianyungang all recorded growth above 40 percent.

Tourism demand remained a key driver, with Quanzhou and Xiamen among the busiest destinations in March.
