To welcome the Year of the Horse, Pan Feifei, an intangible cultural heritage inheritor of paper-quilling techniques from Nanxun district in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, presented a stunning horse-themed art installation during the second Intangible Cultural Heritage Theme Global Spring Festival Gala, held from Jan 12 to 13 in Beijing.
Standing about two meters tall, the artwork showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of paper quilling, featuring Song Dynasty (960–1279) brocade patterns and traditional auspicious elements. The piece took two months to complete from design to execution.
Paper quilling is a traditional art form that involves rolling and shaping strips of paper to create intricate designs.
With its stable form and rich layers, the artwork delivered a strong visual impact under stage lighting, becoming a standout among the intangible cultural heritage displays at this event.
"The horse symbolizes progress, strength, and auspiciousness in traditional Chinese culture," Pan said. "Through the fusion of quilling art and zodiac culture, I hope to convey the unique charm of paper quilling and extend Spring Festival blessings to everyone."
In recent years, Pan has actively promoted the art of paper quilling through creation and exhibitions. Her previous work, a 2.7-meter-tall three-dimensional quilling piece titled "Galloping Red Horse", was displayed in a Seattle mall in the United States, drawing much attention with its red and gold hues and elements like clouds and flowers.
