The Huzhou Art Museum in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, is currently hosting the Jean-Pierre Chevassus-Agnes Jiangnan Sketch Exhibition, featuring the works of French artist Jean-Pierre Chevassus-Agnes.
His Western oil painting techniques bring a fresh artistic expression to the charm of water towns in Jiangnan, a region that refers to the southern areas along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
This artistic journey began in 1956 when Chinese painter Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) visited France. After viewing Chinese artworks, Pablo Picasso remarked that "true art is in China". This statement left a lasting impression on the then 8-year-old Chevassus-Agnes and inspired his future explorations in the East.

Chevassus-Agnes studied at the Valence Normal School and the People's Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. After retiring in 2004, he embarked on a journey from the West to the East, visiting China more than 10 times in search of artistic inspiration. He found his muse in Huzhou, a city famed for its rich artistic heritage and the unique architectural charm of the Nanxun ancient town.
The French painter frequently wandered Nanxun's cobblestone streets, capturing the town's essence in his paintings. Blending Eastern and Western aesthetics, his depictions of Nanxun preserve the town's spirit while infusing it with French romanticism.
The exhibition, which runs until May 29, features 91 thematic oil paintings. Art enthusiasts are encouraged to visit and experience this unique cultural fusion.
