A neighborhood canteen in Ningbo has evolved into an all-day social hub where residents of various generations congregate and enjoy sharing the same space.

The project, "Liudian Ai" in Yinzhou district, began when local surveys showed strong demand from elderly residents for an accessible community dining option. In response, a neighborhood service center was restructured: community functions moved upstairs, while the ground floor was renovated and handed over to a professional elderly care operator to run as a public-facing dining space. The name was kept from a local welfare initiative focused on senior care.

What started as a senior-focused canteen has since developed into a mixed-use venue combining a noodle shop, tea room, cafe, and small retail corner inside an ageing residential area.

Rather than serving just one group, it now follows the rhythm of the neighborhood. Elderly residents come for affordable meals, office workers arrive at lunchtime, and younger visitors often stay later for tea, casual meetings, or light work. A fast-cooked pork liver noodle dish has become a popular order among younger customers.

Behind the concept is a broader idea of integrating elderly services into everyday urban life rather than isolating them. Managed by a professional service team of carers, the space also includes pet-friendly seating, job opportunities for people with disabilities, and retail sales of the same food products that are served on-site.

With multiple peak hours throughout the day, the venue now serves several hundred visitors a day. Its success lies in how it operates less as a single-purpose facility and more as a shared neighborhood space that adapts to different people and their respective needs at different times.
